"Should I learn AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud?" is the most-asked question in certification communities, and it has no universal answer. It does have a good answer for your situation, which is what the quiz further down is for.

This post used to carry a second column claiming each vendor's share of cloud job postings, a salary-by-level table and a set of study-time estimates. None of them named a source and we could not find one, so they are gone rather than dressed up. Nobody publishes a per-vendor split of cloud job postings, and neither AWS, Microsoft nor Google publishes a certification-holder headcount. Anyone showing you a precise split is estimating.
The Honest Version of the Demand Question
The wider market is growing, and that part is measurable. BLS projects employment across computer and IT occupations to grow much faster than the average for all occupations from 2024 to 2034, with roughly 317,700 openings a year, and a May 2024 median wage of $105,990 against $49,500 for all US occupations. Market share is also not the same thing as hiring. A vendor with a fifth of the market can still be the one every employer on your shortlist runs, and that is the variable that decides your first certification.
What Each Exam Costs
AWS publishes a flat US dollar price on each certification page: $100 foundational, $150 associate, $300 professional, $300 specialty. (AWS certification pages: Cloud Practitioner, Solutions Architect Associate, Solutions Architect Professional, Security Specialty)
Microsoft lists $99 for AZ-900 and $165 for AZ-104, with its own caveat attached: price depends on the country or region in which the exam is proctored. Treat those as a US reference point, not as your price. (Microsoft Learn credential pages)
Which One Should You Choose?
The choice that consistently works is the boring one: learn the platform your target employers already run. A certification in the cloud your shortlist of companies actually uses beats a marginally better paid certification in one they do not. The Multi-Cloud Argument
We used to claim that people certified in two or more platforms earn 15 to 20 percent more. We could not source it, so it is gone. The defensible version of that argument is about how estates are actually built: Flexera puts 73 percent of organizations on hybrid estates, and 33 percent running multiple public clouds alongside multiple private clouds. If most employers run more than one cloud, an engineer who can only work in one is constrained in a way that shows up in the work they get handed. That is a reason to broaden eventually. It is not a promise of a specific raise, and we are not going to invent one.
A sequence that reflects that:
- Start with one platform, whichever your employer or target employers use
- Get to associate level, where the work stops being conceptual
- Add a second platform, even at foundational level, so you can read the other side
- Specialize, picking a domain such as security, data or networking and going deep
